Each season brings a different set of home maintenance concerns. In the winter you had to think of ice and snow, in the summer it’s heat and humidity, and in the fall you’ll need to consider the falling leaves and their impact on your home.

While the weather is nice and the sun is shining, it’s a great time to think of a few home maintenance items that are especially important during the spring months.

1.      Check screens- Whether it’s screen doors, windows, or a screened porch, check to ensure that your screens are free of large holes. You don’t want the warm-weather bugs finding their way into your home.

2.      Gutters- Clean your gutters and spouts. Run water through these to ensure they are clear.

3.      Caulk- Fill any missing caulk areas. If you have any large holes, fill them in before they allow further damage.

4.      Chimney- Now that the winter has passed, make an appointment to clean your chimney.

5.      Roof- check your roof for damage or missing shingles.

6.      Air conditioner- Since you’ll be turning on the AC very soon, make sure it’s in good working order by checking that it is clean and that all belts are working.

7.      Air filter- It’s a good time to remember to do your regular filter change.

8.      Windows- Check seals for holes or cracks. Seal anything that is not airtight.

9.      Siding- Clean any exterior siding with a pressure washer.

10.  Outdoor faucets- Freezing temps could have damaged your outdoor faucets. Ensure they’re in good working order before using for spring gardening projects.

11.  Soil- Fill any low areas adjacent to your foundation with compacted soil. This will protect your home from foundation flooding.

12.  Mower- Make sure your mower is in good working order. Change the oil and add gas to the tank before using it for the season.

13.  Fire- Ensure that firewood is not sitting too near your home and that it is at least 2 feet off the ground. This prevents rot or damage to your home.

14.  Foundation- Check your foundation for any issues. If you notice shifting, cracking, or crumbling, it’s best to call an expert sooner rather than later.

15.  Porches and decks- You’re going to want to spend some time on your porch in the coming months. Make sure your porch doesn’t have any loose or missing boards. If you haven’t treated your wood deck in a few years, it’s important to treat the wood to prevent it from damage.

These helpful spring maintenance tips will ensure a spring with fewer home-related woes and more time to spend enjoying your home and all the season has to offer.
